Introducing the College Football Draft

Dan,

I'm concerned that college football is on the decline. Is there anything that can be done to save it?

Worried in Hawaii

Worried,

Yes, there are several things the NCAA can do to spark new interest in college football and ensure it doesn't go down the same route as Major League Baseball. The primary problem with college football is – much like professional baseball – the top teams have an unfair advantage on talent thus leading to little-to-no hope for mid-tier and lower-tier teams.

The answer to this is simple: Institute a college draft of high school players. Now, with so many teams in college, steps need to be made to ensure that the bottom teams don't intentionally lose games just to get better draft position. Also, there should always be an incentive to be a top 25 team, so the draft would have the following rules:

Round 0 of the draft will consist only of the top 25 teams drafting in order of number 1 to number 25.

Round 1 of the draft will be the first full draft round with all teams drafting. It will also start with the number one team and descend from there.

Rounds 2 through 15 will start with the last team and work its way to the top team. This will provide talent for the lower-tier teams and allow them to work their way into college powerhouses.

The draft will need to take place for two weeks in February since it will take a long time to finish.

But the changes don't stop there. To ensure that the rankings are fair and members of the media cannot effect their teams, a college playoff system will need to be put in place. In fact, it should have been put in place a couple of decades ago, but colleges are known for being rather slow in shoring up holes in the system. Now, since we don't want there to be any unfair advantage to top teams, the playoffs will consist of 64 teams and will take place over the course of six weeks. This means the regular season will need to be reduced to around eight games to make room for the playoffs.

Also, since playoff systems where over half the teams go to the playoffs completely suck, thirty division two teams will be upgraded to division one. These teams will make up three new ten-team conferences: The Lower West, the Lower Central, and the Lower East.

To curb the increasing problem of underclassmen electing to enter the NFL draft, juniors and seniors will be allowed to take endorsement deals. This should help keep the top talent with their teams for the entire four years of eligibility.

Revenue sharing should also be implemented. But, since the colleges are already making fat cash from their students, the revenue should be shared with the people that really deserve it: the fans. To accommodate this, the losing team's college will reimburse the winning team's fans for the cost of their tickets. This should allow for more cash to pay for those tasty hot dogs while at the game, especially when we know our team is going to win.

Last, but probably most important, the NCAA will allow EA Sports to use player names in their games. I am sick and tired of completing a pass from #10 to #86 for 7 yards and a touchdown. I want my names! As I am sure everyone does.

Hope that helps,
Dan
